As someone who grew up in the Midwest, I witnessed women, minorities, and other underserved voices quietly give away their power—not because they lacked intelligence or insight, but because no one ever told them their thoughts mattered.
They learned to brush off sarcasm and snide remarks the way a horse’s tail brushes off a fly—stoic, persistent, and silently keeping score. Too often, they accepted being discounted at home, at work, and in their communities, never realizing that their voice deserved space and respect.
As a child, I was taught to be “less than.” One of my earliest memories—around age seven—was being told to “only speak when spoken to.” Since my stepfather never spoke to me, I learned to stay quiet to stay safe. Over time, that silence turned into distance—and eventually, a deep understanding . . .
We lose respect for people who try to control our voices.
No one’s voice deserves to be silenced.
